The Auburn University Amateur Radio Club, K4RY began in 1912 when the college was known as the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Miller Reese Hutchinson who worked at Edison Labs and was assistant to Thomas Edison transmitted the first message from the station on June 2, 1913 to Thomas Edison. The club was then assigned the call sign 5YI which it held until WWI. Post WWI reconstruction of the station granted the callsign 5XA. Radio Amateur use started in 1920 when the I Tappa Key club was formed.
